Welsh lead classical Brits field

Bryn Terfel Singer Bryn Terfel and composer Karl Jenkins have both been nominated for two Classical Brit Awards alongside Scottish teenager Nicola Benedetti.

Terfel and Jenkins compete in the album of the year category - Terfel is also up for best singer and Jenkins is nominated for best contemporary music.

Benedetti, 18, is also nominated for Album of the Year as well as Young British Classical Performer.

Michael Parkinson will host the awards at the Royal Albert Hall on 4 May.

Placido Domingo, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Vittorio Grigolo are among the artists performing at the event, which will be screened on ITV1 on 7 May.

The singer of the year award is a new category replacing the old male and female artist awards, which pitted singers and composers against each other.

Dario Marianelli (Pride and Prejudice), Harry Gregson-Williams (Kingdom of Heaven) and John Williams (War of the Worlds) are up for soundtrack/musical theatre composer of the year.

Opera star Placido Domingo will be honoured with the lifetime achievement award.

Last year's best album winner, Katherine Jenkins, is nominated in the same category this year for Living A Dream.

Terfel won the award for best male in 2005.
