Natasha Kaplinsky has been confirmed as a main presenter for BBC One's Six O'Clock News.
The former Breakfast host has been co-presenting the slot as cover for Sophie Raworth, who has been on maternity leave.
Sian Williams is to become the permanent co-presenter of Breakfast, alongside Dermot Murnaghan.
Raworth, who has also worked on Breakfast, has moved to the One O'Clock News, replacing Anna Ford.
Veteran newscaster Ford is stepping down from the job this month after more than 15 years with the corporation.
Kaplinsky joined the BBC from Sky News to present the Breakfast programme in 2002.
While working on Breakfast she took part in the first series of Strictly Come Dancing, eventually being crowned winner.
Natasha Kaplinsky said: "After three and a half years on Breakfast this is a fantastic opportunity for me and a dream job.
"More people watch the Six O'Clock News than any other evening bulletin and it's a real privilege to be working on one of the UK's premier news programmes."
