Comic film Failure tops US chart

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey Failure to Launch has debuted at the top of the North American box office, taking $24.6m (£14.2m).

The romantic comedy, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey, replaced Madea's Family Reunion, which fell to fifth after two weeks on top.

McConaughey plays a 35-year-old still living with his parents, who hire an outgoing woman, played by Parker, to entice him into moving out.

Family movie The Shaggy Dog was second, with horror The Hills Have Eyes third.

The top three films had a combined earnings of $56.1m (£32.4m), down on the $64.4m (£37.2m) taken by the top three movies in the same weekend last year - Robots, The Pacifier and Be Cool.

Last week's number two film, 16 Blocks, starring Bruce Willis and Mos Def, dropped to fourth.

The earnings of the top 12 movies were down 10.7% on the same weekend in 2005.

The Shaggy Dog is a remake of the 1959 Disney film The Shaggy DA, while The Hills Have Eyes reworks Wes Craven's 1977 original about cannibals.

After winning the best film Oscar, ensemble drama Crash reopened in 175 US cinemas and took $357,000 (£206,488).
