Musical award for Ray star Foxx

Jamie Foxx Actor Jamie Foxx's musical career has been given a boost after he won best musical artist at a US awards ceremony.

Foxx collected the prize at the Image Awards in Los Angeles, which honour black artists in entertainment.

The Oscar-winner, who recently released an album, Unpredictable, told the audience: "It's good to be surrounded by black folks. Black folks are music."

Foxx won his Academy Award last year for portraying late musician Ray Charles in the movie Ray.

The awards, founded by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1967, recognise achievements in music, film, TV and literature.

Oscar contender Crash, about racial tensions in Los Angeles, took the best film award. Samuel L Jackson won best actor for Coach Carter, the story of a basketball coach encouraging his players to study.

Howard double

Kimberly Elise won the best actress award for comedy Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Her co-star Cicely Tyson took the best supporting actress prize.

Crash star Terrence Howard picked up two awards - best supporting actor for the racial drama, and the best TV actor prize for Lackawanna Blues.

In the music category, Mariah Carey's Emancipation of Mimi won best album, while Alicia Keys took home three prizes: top female musical artist, best song and best video for Unbreakable.

Best new artist was Chris Brown while best duo or group was Destiny's Child.
