Warsaw paintings are by Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn's Jewish Fiancee Two paintings from Warsaw's royal palace collection are by the 17th- century artist Rembrandt, a Polish art official has said.

Art historians have been arguing over the authenticity of the two paintings since 1969.

Regina Dmowska, who is in charge of restoring the paintings, said Rembrandt expert Ernst van den Wetering examined the works and declared them genuine.

The works will be shown in Amsterdam's Rembrandt House Museum from 1 April.

Afterwards they will be shown in Berlin at the Gemaldegalerie der Staatlichen Museum.

Opinion

Ms Dmowska said the Dutch expert made two visits to Warsaw and this week reached the positive conclusion that "they were indeed Rembrandt works".

She said the two paintings were signed, but "it was the style of Rembrandt's painting" that was the basis for declaring the authenticity of the works.

"Polish art historians, convinced that they were Rembrandt paintings, still wanted to get the opinion of professor van den Wetering, who is considered the top Rembrandt expert," Ms Dmowska added.

A number of exhibits have been organised this year to mark the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth.
