Madonna and Gorillaz to team up

Gorillaz Pop star Madonna will perform with "virtual" band Gorillaz at Wednesday's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles next week.

Organisers said the singer would appear with a 3D colour animation of the cartoon band in what organisers called an "exciting Grammy moment".

Gorillaz - created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn - have been nominated for four Grammys, while Madonna has previously won five.

Sir Paul McCartney will also perform at the ceremony for the first time.

He is nominated for three awards, including album of the year for Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.

Star-studded tribute

Gorillaz are expected to appear in a 3D visual first used at the MTV Europe awards in Portugal last year.

It is not yet known which track Madonna and Gorillaz will perform at the event.

The four cartoon "members" of the Gorillaz - 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel, were created by animator Jamie Hewlett.

It was only after their initial hits in 2001 that the group's creators admitted that they did not really exist.

The band scored their first UK chart-topping single, Dare, in September of last year, while 2005's Demon Days gave them their first number one album.

Coldplay, Oscar-winning actor turned R&B singer Jamie Foxx and Christina Aguilera are among the other acts expected to perform at the Grammy ceremony next week.

The evening will also feature a star-studded tribute to Sly And The Family Stone, including Maroon 5, British soul singer Joss Stone and the Black Eyed Peas.

Mariah Carey, rapper Kanye West and John Legend are leading the Grammy hopefuls, with eight nominations each.
