Paul Weller, who will get a lifetime achievement prize at the Brit Awards, has said he would reform The Jam only if his children were "destitute".
Nominees for this year's prestigious awards are announced on Tuesday. The ceremony is in London on 15 February and broadcast on ITV1 the next evening.
Weller said the idea of bands reforming was "sad".
The Jam had four number one hits - including Town Called Malice - and six multi-platinum albums.
Solo career
Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and James Blunt are among the artists announced to play at the ceremony.
Weller, 47, will close the show with a live performance shortly after receiving the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award.
He started out as lead singer of The Jam in 1977 - with bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler - and went on to form the Style Council in the early-1980s, before launching a successful solo career.
In an interview with BBC 6 Music he ruled out the possibility of reforming The Jam.
He said: "Let me just nip that in the bud right now. That will never, ever happen.
"Me and my children would have to be destitute and starving in the gutter before I'd even consider that, and I don't think that'll happen anyway.
"I think it's a great thing that The Jam's music has endured over the years and people still love it and still play it.
"It still means something to people and a lot of that's because we stopped at the right time, it didn't go on and become embarrassing."
Brit organisers added: "The outstanding contribution award is the highest honour the UK record industry can bestow.
"Paul Weller is an artist who scores on every measure and typifies the range and quality of British music at its best."
Other artists confirmed for the Brits include KT Tunstall, Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West.
DJ and TV presenter Chris Evans will be hosting the awards for the second year running.
Last year's big winners were the Scissor Sisters, Franz Ferdinand, Keane and Joss Stone.
