Age ban on Stones fans is lifted

The Rolling Stones

A ban on older fans seeing the Rolling Stones perform at the Super Bowl has been lifted, organisers say.

People over 45 were initially not invited to take to the field and dance during the concert, as the task was considered too physically demanding.

But US National Football League (NFL) spokesman Brian McCarthy said: "We wanted to open it up."

The youngest member of the veteran rock performers is 58, while the band has a combined age of 246.

'Unique experience'

The 2,000 audience members for the event in Detroit on 5 February will be required to enter and exit the field of play quickly. There will be no seating and participants will be on their feet for long periods of time.

They are expected to wait in a tunnel for much of the first half of the game.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

After hearing that fans aged over 45 wanted to attend the event, the NFL decided to invite anyone over the age of 18, without the upper age limit.

The NFL said it would be a "once-in-a-lifetime chance" to experience the prestigious US event "from a totally unique perspective".

The Superbowl, which is one of the most-watched events on US television, has featured music stars in the past, including Sir Paul McCartney and Janet Jackson.

The singer sparked controversy at the 2004 event when her right breast was exposed during a dance routine with Justin Timberlake.
