Star Wars tops 2005 movie chart

Star Wars The final Star Wars film was 2005's most successful movie at the worldwide box office, trade publication Screen International reports.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith took a total of $848.5m (£489.7m).

But in the international box office - chart which excludes North America - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005 was the most successful.

Both films took more than $800m (£462m) worldwide while no other movies surpassed $600m (£346m).

Evil transformation

Sci-fi blockbuster Revenge Of The Sith was the final Star Wars prequel, following Anakin Skywalker's transformation into the evil Darth Vader.

By the end of 2005 its US box office total was nearly $110m (£63m) ahead of Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire.

However, outside North America Goblet of Fire took approximately $67m (£38m) more than Revenge of the Sith.

Goblet of Fire was also the most successful film of 2005 at the UK box office.

Last weekend it took $17m (£9.8m) from 60 international markets and $7.4m (£4.2m) in the US.

This year shooting will begin on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth instalment in the fantasy series, due to be released in 2007.
