Kinks edge Beatles in song vote

Ray Davies The greatest songs of the past five decades have been selected by BBC Radio 2 listeners, with the Beatles overlooked in favour of The Kinks.

The Kinks' You Really Got Me beat two Beatles singles to be voted greatest tune between 1955 and 1964.

Robbie Williams' Angels won the 1995 to 2004 battle, while the Pet Shop Boys' West End Girls was voted best from 1985 to 1994.

Listeners chose from a shortlist of five songs from each decade.

The songs, picked by the British Academy of Composers, were voted on by six million people.

Top five songs of the decades

Voted for by Radio 2 listeners

Between 1964 and 1975, David Bowie's Space Oddity won out over The Who's My Generation and The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction.

On par

Listeners plumped for Queen's epic Bohemian Rhapsody to represent the best in music between 1975 and 1984.

Radio 2 music editor Colin Martin said: "When we asked listeners to select their favourite song from five decades of great British hits we always thought the Beatles or John Lennon - who between them got the most nominations - would top at least one of the decades.

"How wrong we were."

He added: "The listeners have voted and the Beatles are out.

"Great songs like You Really Got Me, Space Oddity and Bohemian Rhapsody are regarded as being not just on a par with Lennon and McCartney, but out in front in their contribution to and influence on British music."

Radio 2 held its Songs of the Decades contest to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ivor Novello Awards, which honours songwriting talent.

The awards will be held in London on Thursday.
