Nearly 13m people watched Friday's Coronation Street wedding, a spokeswoman for the show has confirmed.
The episode, which saw duo Ken and Deirdre tie the knot for the second time, peaked at 12.9m - a 60% share of the total available audience.
The pair married in an episode that was edited to reflect the royal wedding date change.
The show had referred to the fact that the couple were getting married on the same day as Prince Charles.
But two references were dropped after the royal nuptials moved to Saturday.
"We did have to remove a couple of sentences from the broadcast, but it was just a matter of doing a tiny bit of editing," said a spokeswoman.
Power surge
The National Grid said the wedding episode caused power to surge up to 1,200 megawatts as it ended - enough to boil nearly 500,000 kettles.
Spokesman Stewart Larque said the power surge was "big but not huge", at nearly double that of a normal show.
"It is nearly twice as much as you would normally get at the end of an episode of Coronation Street or EastEnders," he said.
Ken and Deirdre first walked down the aisle in 1981 in an episode shown two days before Prince Charles' first marriage to Lady Diana Spencer.
Strike action
The Weatherfield duo have had seven marriages, two affairs, two divorces and four children between them.
The wedding formed part of an hour-long special that was followed by a dedicated documentary looking at the romantic upheavals of the soap couple over the years.
Roache and Kirkbride are two of the Manchester-based soap's longest-serving actors.
Roache has been in the show since its inception in 1960, while Kirkbride joined the programme in 1972.
There were fears future episodes of Coronation Street and other popular ITV dramas might be disrupted by strike action.
But an ITV spokesman said the channel did "not foresee a delay in delivering drama serial programming on schedule".
