Bollywood star gets film festival

Amitabh Bachchan A film festival dedicated to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan is to be held in New York.

The 13-film retrospective of the actor's career will be held at the Lincoln Center from 8-19 April.

The festival will feature highlights from 62-year-old's catalogue of more than 140 films from four decades as one of Bollywood's biggest stars.

Bachchan's 1970s movie Anand (Joy) will open the festival and the actor is due to make an appearance on 15 April.

Lincoln Center programmer Uma D'Cunha said: "The festival is to make the common American aware of Bollywood and Bachchan, the superstar of Bollywood.

'Meticulous' work

"We wanted to show some more of his films but were not able to get the prints while some producers did not give them to us.

"The other challenge was to get the subtitles right - for which we sat with his wife Jaya Bachchan and did all the work meticulously."

Other films to be shown include Zanjeer (Chain), Amar Akbar Anthony, Abhimaan (Pride), Khakee, Aks, Namak Halal, Dev, Aankhen (Eyes), Saudagar (Merchant), Agneepath (Path of Fire), Satte Pe Satta and his latest work Black.

A documentary on Bachchan's life's work will also be screened.

Two other Indian film personalities - director Ritwik Ghatak and actress Shabana Azmi - have previously had their works showcased at the Lincoln Center.
