Charles swansong is worldwide hit

Ray Charles Late singer Ray Charles' final album has achieved global multiple platinum status, according to his publicists.

Genius Loves Company has sold two million copies in the US alone, with a further three million sales in other parts of the world.

The 73-year-old, who died in June, recorded the series of duets with other artists, including Norah Jones.

The album made the US top ten on its August release, and became the first million seller of his 53-year career.

Award winner

The blind musician made more than 250 recordings, won 13 Grammy awards and was considered a pioneer of soul music.

His discography features five gold discs, each selling 500,000 units, but these were outstripped by his final release.

Genius Loves Company made its debut at number two on the Billboard album charts, and shifted more than 200,000 copies in its first week of sale.

It took six weeks for the record to make platinum status in the US, selling in excess of one million copies.

The album was made as Charles' health began to deteriorate, but producer John Burk said that the singer continued to work and was able to "dazzle".

Among the most famous songs of Charles' career are Georgia On My Mind and I Can't Stop Loving You.

The life of the music legend has been made into a film, Ray, whose soundtrack has also made the US top ten.

Released in the UK on 21 January, Ray stars Collateral actor Jamie Foxx whose portrayal of Charles is being touted for an Oscar nomination.
