MTV follows Brandy birth

Music channel MTV is to cement its success in celebrity reality TV by following the birth of R&B star Brandy's first baby.

The success of The Osbournes has prompted a flurry of excitement from television commissioning editors in the US and UK.

MTV Diary Presents: Brandy-Special Delivery will start broadcasting in the US on Tuesday 18 June, the singer's website reported.

The station is also in discussion Sean "P Diddy" Combs about a possible celebrity-driven reality show, showbiz trade magazine Variety said.

The Brandy mini-series will be in the same slot as The Osbournes and will portray "the daily life of Brandy as she balances her marriage, career, family and impending motherhood".

At least four half-hour episodes have already been prepared, Variety said.

But production is continuing and the series will have its finale with the birth of the baby.

MTV's senior vice-president of music development Lois Curren told Variety the Brandy reality series "really had nothing to do with The Osbournes".

"Brandy is such a huge core artist to us, and this is of great interest to our viewers, to have this event.

"This event came up, and Brandy had just released an album. This was more event-driven."

'Diary cameras'

Sadly for reality TV fans, the Brandy show has neither hidden cameras nor 24-hour coverage.

Instead, the R&B star's home has been fitted with "diary cameras" to allow her to record her feelings over a two-month period.

"We were following her with crews and have been very, very respectful of when she does and when she doesn't want us to roll," Curren added.

Brandy's latest album, Full Moon, was released in March, and has shifted about 700,000 copies in the US.
