Lara Croft fans are being promised a "stronger and more complex heroine" as her sixth Tomb Raider adventure is launched.

The makers of the cyber star say they have designed her to have 10 times more detail than before.

In Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness, Lara is framed for a murder and must battle to clear her name.

Core Design and Eidos Interactive, the companies behind Tomb Raider, say the game will be launched on 15 November, in time for Christmas.

In a boost for Sony, which faces stiff competition from two new entrants to the games console market this year, the new game will only be available for its PlayStation 2 machine and PC.

Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft on the big screen

The heroine is the one of the world's most famous computer games characters and was last year immortalised on the big screen with Angelina Jolie playing the title role.

The game's makers are promising to make her curvaceous figure even more striking.

She is created on computer using 5,000 polygons - or sections - compared with 500 in previous games.

Core Design managing director Jeremy Heath-Smith said: "It means the definition is a lot more finer and she moves more smoothly."

Worldwide smash

The latest model to take on the role of Lara Croft in promotional material is Jill de Jong from the Netherlands.

She is the sixth woman to take up the role and Mr Heath-Smith said of the 20-year-old: "We believe Jill has what it takes to push Lara to a new generation."

Development for the first Tomb Raider game began at Derby-based Core Design in 1995.

It was released in November the following year and entered the UK computer games charts at number one.

The game's sequel - Tomb Raider II - was launched in 1997 and became the biggest-selling game of all time in the UK.

Since then three more games have been created, including the last which allowed players to look back over the life of Lara Croft.

The game has generated more than £650m in worldwide sales.
