The Monty Python team has achieved cult status
It is one of the most important events in the European film calendar, and stars like Charlotte Rampling and Brenda Blethyn flew in to attend these, the 14th European Film Awards.
Among the highlights was a special lifetime achievement award for the Monty Python team.
Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones were in Berlin to accept the award.
But the death of George Harrison was very much on their minds.
The former Beatle financed their controversial film Life of Brian when no-one else would.
French hits
The Scottish actor Ewan McGregor was also honoured with a special achievement award for his work on the musical Moulin Rouge.
And there was more British success, as Ben Kingsley won the award for best actor for Sexy Beast and cinema-goers across Europe voted Colin Firth their people's choice for best actor for his role in the comedy Bridget Jones' Diary.
But it was also a good night for France, with Isabelle Huppert taking the prize for best actress for The Piano Teacher, a film about sexual repression.
And the French hit Amelie won two top prizes: best director for Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the ultimate accolade - best film.
These may not be the Oscars, but it is hoped they do at least help raise the profile of European cinema.
