Revolver - released in 1966 - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The White Album (1968) and Abbey Road (1969) take the first, second, third and fifth places respectively in the 'All time top 1,000 albums' to be published by Virgin on Tuesday.

The survey is based on almost 200,000 votes, making it the largest poll ever conducted.

The compilers also took into account all the similar surveys in Britain and the US over the past three years to create a 'poll of polls'.

The Beatles also top a separate list of the Top 50 artists of all time, followed by Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd.

The poll also reveals that the 1970s, now considered as back in vogue for fashion and music, is rock 'n' roll's golden age, with almost a third of all albums coming from that decade.

While the dinosaurs of rock still seem to rule the pop world, Nirvana's Nevermind makes the top 1,000 in fourth place while R.E.M's Automatic For the People is in seventh.

Oasis make the chart in ninth place with (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, which tops the chart's All time Top 50 Indie/Punk Albums, while the band come fourth in the list of top 50 artists.

The survey also lists the five All Time Worst Albums, headed by Screaming Lord Sutch's Lord Sutch and His Heavy Friends, and the five All Time Most Consistently Overrated Albums, topped by Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms.
