Eccentric US indie band Eels have just released a new album, Souljacker, and frontman E - also known as Mark Everett - lets us in on some of his musical foibles.

What type of music did you listen to when you were younger?

Country and western and rap.

Have your tastes changed over the years?

Not at all.

What was the last record you bought?

Missy Elliott.

Where do you most like listening to music - and why?

In the tub. I like to be naked with the music.

Souljacker is Eels's fourth studio album
You use some unusual instruments - what is your favourite sound (instrumental or other)?

I like sounds that make the listener check to see if something is wrong with the stereo.

You often sing about unhappiness - but what makes you happy?

The ladies make me happy.

Are there any songs that you can't listen to because they irritate you?

Not a single one. Oh, wait, I forgot about Don't Worry Be Happy.

Which song by another artist do you wish you had written?

Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott.

Which song from the last 12 months is most likely to gain classic status?

Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott.

What would be your dream line-up for a music festival?

Hank Williams, Run DMC, AC/DC and Nina Simone.

Where do you write most of your songs?

In the toilet.

Where would you most like to perform?

Carnegie Hall Deli.

If you had to change the name of the band what would you choose instead of Eels?

Mr E's beautiful American - not indie but still full of street cred rock combo.
