Kylie and Beckham begin chart race

Kylie and Posh
Kylie Minogue and Victoria Beckham release singles on Monday
Pop stars Victoria Beckham and Kylie Minogue go head-to-head for the number one chart spot this week with the simultaneous release of their latest singles.

Both songs are released on Monday with Victoria Beckham bidding for her first solo number one with Not Such An Innocent Girl.

Kylie is aiming to add to her five previous number ones with Can't Get You Out Of My Head.

But aside the battle of the pop princesses, the chart this week also presents tough competition from elsewhere.

Victoria Beckham

Alien Ant Farm releases a hotly-tipped rock cover of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal and Shaggy is also entering the fray with his new release Luv Me, Luv Me.

Chart expert Gennaro Castaldo of HMV said: "Everyone seems to think it's a straight fight between Kylie and Victoria for the number one.

"But we shouldn't discount Shaggy, who's a massive singles artist these days, while Alien Ant Farm's cover could prove a real dark horse."

Publicity

This will be Beckham's second attempt at solo number one success after she failed with Out Of My Mind in August 2000.

That track, performed with Dane Bowers, was beaten to the top by Spiller - featuring Sophie Ellis Bextor - with the track Groovejet.

Travis

However, unlike her first attempt, Beckham has not chosen to accompany her new single release with a blaze of publicity.

Beckham is the only member of the Spice Girls not to have had a solo number one.

Both Beckham and Kylie could be disappointed to find out on Sunday, with the new chart, that they have both lost out.

After all, Shaggy's previous two singles went to number one while Alien Ant Farm have been picking up strong radio and TV support which is expected to translate into sales.

But then there is also a new release this week from Travis called Side, which is expected to go into the top five.
