Liv Ullmann heads Cannes jury
Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann is to lead the jury at 2001's Cannes Film Festival, replacing US actress Jodie Foster who quit the job earlier this month.
Ullmann said she was "honoured and deeply appreciative," adding her position would allow her to do "what I enjoy the most - watching movies".
The star, born in December 1939 in Tokyo, gained international fame after appearing in films by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman such as Shame, Cries and Whispers and Scenes from a Marriage.
Film lover
The Cannes film festival, which takes place between 9 and 20 May, has long been considered one of the foremost dates in the movie world's calendar.
Ullmann's directing work includes her acclaimed debut Sofie in 1992. She has also written two books of memoirs, Changing, in 1977, and Choices in 1984.
Ullmann spoke of her love of film after her role was announced, saying: "For me, movies can be the best approach to the emotion and purity of music - and like music, a movie can pass all our protective walls and go right into our deepest emotions."
Oscar-winning actress Foster said she had a "heavy heart'' over pulling out of the presidency, citing a clash with her filming commitments.
She was drafted at short notice to replace Nicole Kidman, who withdrew from the upcoming Panic Room, directed by David Fincher, due to injury.
