Debbie Mathers-Briggs claimed she was "in shock" when papers were served on her son Marshall Mathers, who gives his first concert in Manchester on Thursday night.
In an interview with Trevor McDonald on the Tonight programme she said she had merely wanted her solicitor to stop Eminem making derogatory remarks in his lyrics, adding that she had no idea her legal action could cost the rap star up to £7m.
Asked whether she had the power to drop the case, she said: "That's something we're seriously thinking about - we're working on it."
Eminem, 28, came into conflict with his mother over lyrics which portrayed her as a bad parent. His hit single My Name Is included the lyrics: "... my mom smokes more dope than I do".
'Cussing'
Ms Mathers-Briggs said she had originally met her lawyer to tone down the "cussing" in her son's records.
"He was to send Marshall a letter warning him to stop being so demeaning and said if he didn't stop the lawyer would hit him with a lawsuit."
"The next thing I knew, my son was hit with a $10m (£6.6m) lawsuit. I was in shock. I had no idea my son was going to get hit for $10m."
In fact, Mathers-Briggs claims it was Eminem who first informed her by phone that he had "just been served with a paper".
"I sat there in shock and thought this is not happening," she told Trevor McDonald.
'Spoiled brat'
Mathers-Briggs, a single parent, denies that she was a bad mother to the controversial rapper: "I did the best I could - it was just him and me."
"Anything Marshall wanted I would try and get for him. I got kicked out of stores because he'd be like the spoiled brat lying in the aisle, arms and legs spread open."
She also voiced fears that Eminem, who arrived in the UK amid accusations of homophobia and misogyny, would go to jail in the US over assault and firearm charges.
"I've been told that he will and that he's going to get at least three months. They want to use him as an example."
She said Eminem's wife Kimberly was at the root of the relationship troubles between mother and son. She claims Kimberly forced the rapper to choose between his wife and his mother.
"I've been very betrayed by Kim. There are a lot of things that have happened that Marshall's not even aware of."
