Britney Spears 'set for film role'

The teenage singer is reportedly lined up to play a clean cut, high school student in the film, according to trade paper The Hollywood Reporter.

The paper said that the as-yet-untitled film has a modest budget of approximately $10m (£6m) and is scheduled to start shooting in March.

Little-known director Tamra Davis is reportedly at the helm of the project.

The plot line of the movie is said to involve three characters, a cheerleader, a burnout and Spears' character, all of whom embark on a cross-country trip.

The trio meet a young would-be musician who persuades them to travel to Los Angeles to compete in a musical contest, according to the paper.

Britney Spears is expected to sing in the movie.

The news follows the announcement from Random House publishers that Spears and her mother are writing a novel together.

Last week, Spears earned two Grammy nominations for her album Oops! ... I Did It Again and for the title track of the album.
