Wade to head News International

Sun newspaper editor Rebekah Wade has been appointed chief executive of News International, the media group said.

She will be responsible for operations at five News International titles; The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times, News of the World and the free London Paper.

Ms Wade, at the Sun's helm for six years, will remain in the post until taking up her new job on 1 September.

She said she was "honoured" to be taking up her post "at a crucial time for the newspaper industry".

No announcement has yet been made on who will be replacing her in the editor's chair.

'New commercial structure'

Ms Wade will report to James Murdoch, News Corporation's chairman and chief executive for Europe and Asia, who is also taking up a new post in September when he will additionally become executive chairman of News International.

News International is the main UK subsidiary of international media giant News Corporation, which - as well as newspapers - also owns film, television, cable, magazine and book companies.

The group has been hit by falling advertising revenues and declining sales.

"News International has set a clear course, having reinvented itself with a new commercial structure and a commitment to investing in its journalism to deliver market share gains," said Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation.

"I am confident that we have the right team to lead News International as we develop a new model for our industry."

Earlier this month Ms Wade married horse trainer Charlie Brooks in a wedding attended by Gordon Brown, David Cameron, and other famous names from the worlds of media, business and politics.
