Nuclear power company British Energy says it has received several takeover proposals from interested parties.

The firm added that some proposals included offers above Thursday's closing share price of 680p.

British energy firm Centrica, France's EDF, Germany's RWE and Spain's Iberdrola have all been linked with a possible bid for British Energy.

British Energy operates eight nuclear power stations in the UK and also runs a coal-fired power station.

News of the multiple proposals sent the firm's shares up 8% by close of trade in London.

In March this year, British Energy said it was in talks that could lead to a takeover.

In a statement released on Friday, it said it had received "a range of proposals from several parties wishing to make a full offer" for the firm.

The company said it had reviewed the proposals and decided that talks should continue with all suitors.

"The board wishes to stress that each of the proposals requires further development and that the process is therefore likely to continue for a number of weeks," British Energy said.
