US firm recalls China-made cots

Simplicity cot US baby furniture supplier Simplicity is recalling about one million Chinese-made cots that have been linked to at least two infant deaths.

The adjustable side of the cot can detach, creating a dangerous gap that may trap a baby, said the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Yet CPSC added that it was a design issue, rather than the fact the cots were assembled in China.

Eleven Simplicity models are affected, sold at Wal-Mart and other retailers.

"This recall isn't a China-made problem," said a spokeswoman.

"It's more about hardware and crib design and less about it being assembled in China."

Mattel, which recently had to recall more than 20 million Chinese made toys, also downplayed the fault of its Chinese sub-contractors on Friday.

It instead admitted that most of the toys recalled in recent safety scares had "design flaws" rather than just manufacturing problems.
