NTL launches quadruple-play deal

Family watching NTL cable TV service NTL has unveiled a package which bundles together TV, high-speed internet, and fixed-line and mobile phone services.

Customers will pay £40 a month for the package - NTL's first to incorporate mobile phones after the acquisition of Virgin Mobile.

NTL plans to rebrand itself under the Virgin name in 2007.

It hopes this will attract new users in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market.

The NTL package includes broadband internet with download speeds of up to 2Mb, 30 digital TV channels, unlimited fixed-line weekend calls to any UK landline and 300 texts and 300 mobile minutes a month.

NTL has about 5 million customers compared with rival BSkyB's 8.2 million.

Richard Branson is NTL's biggest shareholder, after its £960m acquisition of Virgin Mobile.

Earlier this year, NTL said it was losing customers to firms such as BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse which are also offering broadband services in an attempt to lure users.

Analyst Richard Ireland, of Ernst & Young, said the launch was a "significant milestone" in the provision of bundled services.

"With four services available from the same supplier for the first time, the offer represents a departure from recent "free" broadband service launches and builds upon NTL's existing triple play by adding Virgin mobile minutes for an extra ten pounds per month," he said.
