New sentence for 'swirled' abuser

Christopher Neil

A convicted Canadian paedophile has been sentenced to a further six years in prison by a Thai court for sexually abusing a second boy.

Christopher Neil, who was arrested after police publicised his digitally "swirled" image globally, was convicted of abusing his first victim's brother.

He had denied abusing the Thai boy, who was aged nine at the time.

At his earlier conviction in August Neil, 33, had pleaded guilty to abusing the boy's 13-year-old brother.

Neil was found guilty of the second boy's abuse on 14 November, but news of the sentence was only released by Thailand's Criminal Court on Monday.

He had already begun serving the first sentence of three years and three months, and the six-year sentence will run consecutively, the court said.

The court ordered Neil to pay the second boy compensation of 50,000 baht (£950; $1,400).

The international police agency Interpol sparked a worldwide manhunt when it launched its first global appeal in October 2007 for information on a suspected paedophile.

Interpol appealed for help after experts unscrambled digitally distorted photos of the suspect.

Neil, a teacher, was arrested soon after a 17-year-old Thai youth told the authorities the suspect had sexually molested him several years ago.
