Police in Thailand are investigating the death of a 69-year-old British man who had been living in a village in the north-east of the country.

Ian Beeston, a retired design engineer at Ford's Dagenham plant in east London, was found beaten and stabbed to death at his home on Friday.

Local police said Mr Beeston's Thai wife and her male friend have been arrested in connection with the case.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed that an investigation had begun.

A spokeswoman said: "We can confirm a British national died in Roi Et, north-east Thailand, on Friday August 8.

"The Royal Thai police are investigating."
