Ads for Fiji's post-coup cabinet

By Phil Mercer
BBC News, Nadi, Fiji

Cmdr Bainimarama Fiji's military leaders have taken out newspaper advertisements to recruit members of an interim government after seizing power earlier this week.

The army has stated that applicants must be "of outstanding character" and must not have a criminal record.

Fiji's elected leaders were ousted in a bloodless coup after weeks of tension.

The military's notice in the Fiji Times newspaper has appeared next to advertisements for real estate agents and a company selling tropical cruises.

Rarely can a country have sought government ministers in the want ads.

Jobseekers must have at least 10 years of experience in the workforce, be of sound character, and must never have been declared bankrupt.

An army spokesman said he expected the recruitment campaign to go well and stressed that several people had already applied, although he would not say how many.

The advert has stated that the interim government would help rid Fiji of corruption and bad practices.

The military has accused ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase of running a sleazy and racist administration.

Mr Qarase has insisted that the chief of the armed forces, Cmdr Frank Bainimarama was a dictator who "raped" the constitution.

A caretaker prime minister has already been appointed by the army. The deadline for applications for other ministerial positions closes on Tuesday.
