Typhoon Chebi heads for Vietnam

A rain-lashed farmer drives a utility vehicle in Pangasinan province, the Phillippines A typhoon which has caused major flooding in the northern Philippines is heading towards central Vietnam.

Typhoon Chebi, packing 120km/h (75mph) winds, is expected to strengthen as it moves westwards on Sunday.

At least two people were injured and more than 8,00 evacuated from their homes as the storm passed over the north-eastern Philippines.

Chebi follows Typhoons Cimaron and Xangsane which killed more than 200 people in the Philippines in September.

All storm alerts were lowered after Typhoon Chebi moved into the South China Sea, officials said.

Typhoon Chebi - which means swallow in Korean - earlier ripped through the central Luzon region causing flash flooding and landslides.

Officials said most of the floodwaters had begun to recede but that some rice crops had been damaged.

Last month Typhoon Cimaron hit the same area , leaving 19 people dead.

In September, more than 200 people were killed by Typhoon Xangsane - the most powerful typhoon to hit the Philippines since 1998.

The Philippines is hit by about 20 typhoons every year.
