Earthquake hits north-west China

Scene from February 2003 tremor An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 has killed at least 11 people in the Xinjiang region of north-west China.

The tremor, near the border with Kazakhstan, destroyed some buildings and was felt over a wide area, local officials said.

Rescue teams are now heading to the area, where "the shock was pretty strong", according to one official.

In February, a 6.8 earthquake in Xinjiang left 268 people dead and many homeless.

"The lights were swinging, the whole place shook," a local official told AFP news agency on Monday.

An official from the Xinjiang Seismological Bureau told Reuters news agency that houses built in the 1960s and 1970s "all collapsed".

He could not say how many structures came down.

Rescue teams have been sent to the area.
