Singapore tightens anti-terrorism laws

Singapore has strengthened its anti-terrorism laws, adopting regulations which punish as criminal acts the funding of terrorism and the spreading of hoax threats.

The Ministry of Law said it was formally codifying United Nations resolutions adopted after the attacks on New York and Washington.

Speaking in New York on Monday, Singapore's Foreign Minister, S Jayakumar, repeated his government's commitment to what he called the central global priority of battling extremism.

He said regional groupings now faced the challenge of translating statements of outrage into coherent and co-ordinated international action.
