The deputy Speaker of the Honduran Congress has been shot dead.

Mario Fernando Hernandez was killed by unidentified attackers in the northern city of San Pedro Sula.

Marcos Collier, a candidate for a congressional seat who was travelling with him, was also killed. Another man is reported to have been wounded.

The attack came eight days before primary elections to choose candidates for the presidency and legislature.

Mr Hernandez was seeking re-election to the Congress. He and Mr Collier both belonged to the governing Liberal Party.

The politicians had just visited a school when men wearing balaclavas opened fire on their vehicle, AFP news agency reported, citing police.
