Fire blazes in Sao Paulo building

Sao Paulo building on fire (still from Brazilian TV)

Dozens of firefighters have been battling a blaze in a tower block in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

The fire reportedly broke out in a mattress store at the foot of a high-rise commercial building.

Local TV showed pictures of flames and a thick plume of smoke rising from a building in the centre of the city near Congonhas domestic airport.

Brazil's Globo TV initially said a plane had crashed, causing the fire, but later retracted the report.

The airport was the scene of Brazil's worst air accident last year when a plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a building, killing 199 people including passengers, crew and people on the ground.
