Plane crashes in southern Surinam

Twenty people are feared dead in a plane crash in a remote gold-mining area of Surinam in South America.

The twin-engine Antonov AN-28 took off from Paramaribo, capital of the former Dutch colony. Local radio said it went down at Benzdorp in the south.

It was run by local carrier Blue Wing Airlines, aviation authorities said.

Air Traffic Services Director Kenneth Dors told AP news agency that about 20 people - including two pilots - had been on board and all were dead.

Surinam has a population of around half a million. Many foreigners work in its economically vital mining industry.
