Fujimori again under house arrest

Alberto Fujimori (2000) Chile's Supreme Court has ordered that former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori be placed under house arrest ahead of a ruling on his extradition.

The order was made at the request of Peruvian government lawyers citing the "gravity" of the charges against him.

Mr Fujimori, president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, was detained in Chile in November 2005 while returning to Peru from self-imposed exile in Japan.

He faces extradition to Peru on several human rights and corruption charges.

They include the killing by death squad of 25 people in two incidents known as La Cantuta and Barrios Altos.

They also cover alleged illegal phone tapping, the siphoning of state funds to the intelligence service, bribery of politicians and the transfer of $15m (£8.6m) to Mr Fujimori's spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos.

Mr Fujimori has denied any wrongdoing.

The move by Supreme Court judge Urban Marin came a day after a Chilean state prosecutor recommended Mr Fujimori be extradited.

The former Peruvian leader had previously been released from house arrest on condition that he remained in Chile until the Supreme Court ruled on the extradition request.

The court's final ruling on the extradition is expected within the next few months.
