Former Brazil football coach dies

He had spent the last month in hospital in the city of Belo Horizonte.

Santana guided a Brazilian national team that included stars such as Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Junior and Eder through the World Cup in 1982 and 1986.

He encouraged the attacking, flamboyant form of football for which Brazil is famed - though neither side he coached went on to lift the World Cup.

In the 1990s, Santana guided Brazilian club Sao Paulo to championship glory.

Under his stewardship, the club side twice won the South American Libertadores Cup.

Santana started off playing as a goalkeeper before becoming a left winger and spent most of his playing career at the Fluminense club.

Both the national teams he coached at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups were fancied as favourites to win the tournament.

The side he led in 1982 was knocked out in the group stage by Italy in a tense contest that has passed into World Cup legend.

Italian striker Paolo Rossi scored three goals to secure a 3-2 victory over Brazil.

Santana's health had deteriorated rapidly in recent years and he died in hospital in Belo Horizonte, receiving treatment for a stomach infection.
