Troops backer ejected from speech

Bill Young and t-shirt The wife of a Republican was told to leave during the US president's State of the Union speech for wearing a t-shirt in support of US troops.

Representative Bill Young said his wife Beverly was ordered out of the House of Representatives gallery on Tuesday night for being a "protester".

"She... was doing... what the president said we should all do," he said.

Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was ejected before the speech for wearing a t-shirt with an antiwar slogan.

Capitol police said they were enforcing congressional rules barring protests in the galleries of the House and Senate, including the wearing of clothing with political slogans.

Mrs Young's shirt said "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom."

Her husband told the House of Representatives that "because she had on a shirt that someone didn't like... she was kicked out of this gallery".

He said his wife supported "our troops on every day, every hour," visiting wounded soldiers at military hospitals and helping their families.

A Capitol police spokeswoman said the matter was still under investigation, and declined to comment further.
