The Nicaraguan President, Enrique Bolaños, says he and his vice-president, Jose Rizo, are prepared to waive their immunity from prosecution in order to face accusations of breaking the laws on campaign financing.
A prosecutor in Nicaragua has filed an official complaint with the Supreme Court alleging the two men used money from a fund controlled by a former president, Arnoldo Aleman, to finance their election campaign.
President Bolaños has denied the allegation.
Several dozen other senior members of the governing Nicaraguan Constitutional Liberal Party are also included in the accusation.
Mr Aleman is at the centre of a continuing investigation into money laundering and corruption relating to his time in office in the late 1990s.
