Puff Daddy trial set to start

Opening arguments are set to begin on Monday in the trial of rap star Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy.

Mr Combs could face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of charges for possession of a weapon, and trying to bribe his driver to take the blame.

The charges stem from a 1999 shooting at a popular New York nightclub in which three people were injured.

Co-defendant Jamal Barrow faces charges of attempted murder and gun possession, while bodyguard Anthony Jones is accused of having the loaded gun by his feet.

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Charles Solomon finished jury selection on Thursday.

The mixed-race jury took six days to select, with six alternative jurors chosen to be on standby.

Judge Solomon also released potential witness lists submitted by both prosecution and defence.

Jennifer Lopez
Both include the name of singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, Mr Combs' girlfriend, indicating she may testify for either side.

The couple have denied recent rumours that they have split up.

Mr Combs has hired the services of a top team of lawyers, including Johnnie Cochran, who represented OJ Simpson, and Ben Brafman, best known for defending leading mafia figures.

Jury selection was suspended for a day last Monday when Mr Barrow was arrested for driving with a suspended licence.

Mr Barrow has been out on $35,000 (£23,245) bail on the attempted murder charge since he was charged.

Prosecutors say Mr Combs, who was with Lopez at the nightclub, got into an argument and several shots were fired.

He was arrested after being driven away at high speed.

The trial is expected to last several days.
