Journalists who paid the ultimate price

Moreno
The BBC's Allan Little pays tribute to Kurt Schork and Miguel Gil, killed covering the war in Sierra Leone:

Both Kurt Schork and Miguel Gil Moreno knew all about mortal danger.

They had found ways to accommodate its constant presence, but danger wasn't their motivation. They both exemplified that rare combination, breathtaking physical courage allied to a passionate commitment to exposing injustice.

Schork
Kurt came to journalism in the mountains of northern Iraq. The plight of Iraq's Kurds changed his life.

Under siege in Sarajevo, Kurt did more than any other individual to highlight that city's agony.

There wasn't one of us there who did not seek Kurt's advice and the generosity of his company. His journalism was not just about neutral story-telling but about upholding honour in public life.

Miguel Gil Moreno
Miguel was hewn from the same rock. His great talent was staying on when everyone else was leaving. He was the only Western cameraman to stay in Pristina during the Nato air campaign.

His pictures of Albanians being herded on to railway carriages changed our understanding of what was happening in Kosovo.

He was acutely sensitive to suffering inflicted deliberately by the strong against the weak.

He once said he liked to think there are stories "where you truly believe that it's worth risking your life to get the pictures out."

Both he and Kurt understood the nature of risk. For them, it was a necessary part of honouring the ideals they cherished.
