Audio slideshow: Soweto remembered
On 16 June 1976, schoolchildren in the black township of Soweto staged a protest against the teaching of lessons in Afrikaans - the language of South Africa's white minority rulers. When their demonstration was brutally supressed by the police and army, rioting erupted in the country's impoverished black townships.
Today the 'Soweto Uprising' is seen as a defining moment in the struggle against Apartheid. Here, former student activist Oupa Molota recalls his memories of the day:
