Mauritius Prime Minister Paul Berenger has resigned after his party lost Sunday's parliamentary elections.
The opposition Social Alliance, led by Navin Ramgoolam, won the elections securing 38 of the 62 seats in parliament.
Mr Ramgoolam says his top priority will be to negotiate better trade deals for the sugar and textile industries.
The decline of these industries led to rising inflation and unemployment, which may have swung the result.
Mr Ramgoolam says he wants to resurrect trade agreements that gave preference to Mauritian exports.
Some 800,000 people were eligible to vote, choosing from 600 candidates competing for the 62 national assembly seats.
The vote has been overseen by around 40 election monitors from the parliamentary forum of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
