Many missing in Congo ferry fire

A ferry destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo leaves Bangui in the Central African Republic on 10 November Around 200 people are missing after a ferry caught fire on the Congo river, it has emerged.

Aid workers rescued 301 of about 500 passengers, said a UN spokesman in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rest are unaccounted for.

The disaster happened on Monday, near the north-western town of Lukolela.

Witnesses told the spokesman that the ferry had been overloaded when it caught fire, forcing the passengers to jump overboard.

"Those who could make it across to the other bank have survived. Those who didn't, we expect not," the UN's Alex Essome told Reuters news agency.

He added that villagers near the accident scene had spotted bodies floating in the river.

The ferry was travelling from Lukolela to Mbandaka - a two-day trip upstream.

Boat disasters are common on DR Congo's vast network of river and lakes.

In November at least 130 people died when an overcrowded ferry capsized on Lake Maindombe, also in the north-west of the country.
