Black South Africans' degree success

Figures released in South Africa have shown a sharp increase in the number of black South Africans receiving university degrees since the end of apartheid.

A report by the South African Institute of Race Relations found that the number of black graduates jumped from almost 15,000 in 1991 to more than 40,000 in 1998, a rise of 173%.

The Institute said the findings demonstrated that the education deficit between black and white South-Africans was being overcome.
