By-law to tackle bridge trouble

People have been warned that they will be breaking the law if they jump into a river near Milton Keynes.

A by-law has been introduced for Tyringham Bridge which has become a magnet for revellers jumping into the River Ouse.

Villagers have also complained of abuse, litter and anti-social behaviour from people gathering at the bridge.

Milton Keynes Council has reminded people ahead of summer that there is a by-law prohibiting such behaviour.

The by-law states: "It is prohibited to climb upon, hang from, dive from or swim from this bridge or to aid, abet, counsel or procure such an act, by order of Milton Keynes Council."

Milton Keynes Council parish community services officer Heather Baker said: "With the warmer weather coming we know people will be tempted to flock to the site - and we have to warn them that now it is not only dangerous, but illegal to do so.

"We hope this will make the bridge not so attractive to large crowds - and cut down on the subsequent anti-social behaviour."
