Man is charged over street fight

A 35-year-old man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after another man was hurt in a violent row outside a chip shop.

The dispute broke out opposite a fish and chip shop in Mill Road, Maldon, Essex on Sunday evening.

A 38-year-old man was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and received stitches to a head wound and treatment for a broken shoulder bone.

It was the second serious violent incident in Maldon over the weekend.

Essex Police district commander Ch Insp Nick Lee said: "This level of violence is extremely rare in the district and I want to reassure people they are not random attacks on members of the public.

"We want to send out a clear message that violence will not be tolerated."

Six people were also arrested over the weekend in connection with an incident which left an 18-year-old man in hospital with a punctured lung.
