Flooding follows heavy rainfall

Homes across Kent and Sussex have been hit by flooding after heavy rain across the south-east of England.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to flood-hit properties in Tonbridge, Rochester and Maidstone, and several roads were blocked by fallen trees.

In Sussex, police and fire services had dealt with 85 emergency calls on Monday morning. Crews said the coastal towns were hardest-hit.

Two flood warnings remain in place in the Bexhill and Hastings area.

The Environment Agency issued the Sussex flood warnings for Crowhurst, and for the Lower Itchen area.

In the Thames area of Surrey, flood watches were in place for the River Hogsmill and the River Mole.

Peter Midgeley, area manager for East Sussex, said Environment Agency officers were clearing drains in Bexhill-on-Sea.

"People....need to be ready to move their treasured possessions and pets"

He said: "Last night, we had almost an inch of rain, which was very intense at the back of Bexhill and behind Hastings.

"The water has rushed down off the hills into the Powdermill Stream and the Combe Haven Stream. It got to such a point where we felt it was time to put in a flood warning."

He added: "Thankfully, there aren't a huge number of houses and businesses in the area.

"But what it does mean is we need people to keep a very close eye on what's going on and how the river is behaving.

"They need to be ready to move their treasured possessions and pets and have their flood plan in place."

Heavy rain overnight was set to be followed by drier spells on Monday afternoon in the South East, but more thundery downpours were predicted for Monday night.
