Woman and child rescued from fire

A woman and child have been taken to hospital after being rescued from a house fire in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Waterbeach Place in the West End of the city this morning.

Firefighters removed the woman, 24, and her four-year-old daughter, from a bedroom. Details of their condition have not been released.

An investigation into the cause of the fire, which started in the living room, is under way.
