Funeral of pond death youngster

More than 100 mourners have attended the funeral service of a 12-year-old boy who drowned in a former gravel pit.

Carrington Sibanda died earlier this month while playing with his friends at Ashbyville ponds in Scunthorpe.

Relatives were joined by friends from the town's Frederick Gough School for Friday's service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The boy, who moved from South Africa after his mother's death, was being cared for by his aunts in Scunthorpe.

His teacher Simon Stiles, who attended the service, said: "Carrington was a really great lad.

"The thing everyone's remembering today is his huge smile which just infected everyone.

"He walked down the corridor, even when he was doing something he wasn't quite supposed to be, and he would give you this huge smile and it was fantastic."

Local councillor Richard Giles said: "It was certainly very emotional. There were a lot of Carrington's friends from school and they were obviously very distressed.

"All of them commented on his smile and his happy personality, how well he made friends.

"I think it has been a great help to the children and his family to see the number of people here."
